Born in Moscow on December 29, 1818, Alexander II was the eldest son of Tsar Nicholas I and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. He ascended to the throne following his father's death in 1855, at a time when Russia was undergoing significant social and political change. Alexander II is best known for his reforms, which aimed to modernize Russia and bring it into the European fold.
