EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking oval print captures Tsar Alexander II of Russia (1818-1881) in his military uniform, a testament to his long and complex reign as the Tsar of All Russia from 1855 until his assassination in 1881. Born in Moscow on December 29, 1818, Alexander II was the eldest son of Tsar Nicholas I and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. He ascended to the throne following his father's death in 1855, at a time when Russia was undergoing significant social and political change. Alexander II is best known for his reforms, which aimed to modernize Russia and bring it into the European fold. These reforms included the emancipation of the serfs in 1861, the establishment of a judicial system based on European models, and the creation of a zemstvo, a local self-governing body. However, these reforms also led to increased political unrest and opposition, culminating in his assassination by a bomb thrown by members of the People's Will terrorist organization on March 13, 1881. In this print, Tsar Alexander II is depicted in his military uniform, complete with the distinctive whiskers that became a symbol of his reign. The Tsar's uniform, with its golden epaulets and crimson sash, signifies his role as the commander-in-chief of the Russian military. The Tsar's stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and resolve, reflecting the challenges he faced during his reign. This historical print provides a fascinating glimpse into the life and reign of Tsar Alexander II, a complex and influential figure in Russian history. It serves as a reminder of the significant social and political changes that took place in Russia during the 19th century and the enduring impact of the Tsar's reforms on the country and its people.
