EDITORS COMMENTS
Thomas Killigrew: A Portrait of an English Playwright and Theatre Entrepreneur Thomas Killigrew (1612-1683), an English playwright and theatre entrepreneur, is depicted in this striking portrait, dated undetermined but believed to be from the late 17th century. The image captures Killigrew in the prime of his career, with long, curly hair, a richly adorned hat, and elegant attire that speaks to his prosperity and status in society. Born in London, Killigrew was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and began his career in the theatre as an actor in the King's Men, the company of actors that included the great Shakespeare. However, he soon turned his attention to playwriting and producing, founding the King's Company in 1660, which would later become the United Company of the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. Killigrew's plays, which often dealt with historical subjects, were popular in their time and continue to be performed today. Some of his most notable works include "The Parson's Wedding," "The Broken Heart," and "The Conquest of Granada." He also played a significant role in the restoration of the English theatre after the Puritan interregnum, when theatres were closed and the performance of plays was banned. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a man who helped shape the English theatre landscape and left a lasting legacy in the world of literature. Killigrew's contributions to the stage and his entrepreneurial spirit continue to be celebrated and studied by scholars and theatre enthusiasts alike.
