EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant image captured on July 2, 1862, Princess Alice of the United Kingdom and Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt depart from Osborne House on the Isle of Wight following their wedding ceremony. The newlyweds' departure marks the beginning of their honeymoon at St Clare, a nearby estate. The wedding took place amidst the sombre mood of the royal family, who were still in deep mourning for Prince Albert, the late consort of Queen Victoria, who had passed away in December of the previous year. The image captures the melancholic atmosphere of the occasion, with the couple's carriage making its way through the picturesque grounds of Osborne House, surrounded by mourning attendants and members of the royal household. The wedding of Princess Alice and Prince Louis was a significant event in the post-Albert era of the British monarchy, and this photograph offers a glimpse into the emotional and historic moment as the young couple embarked on their new life together.
