Norway - Torghatten

Torghatten (Trolls Hat) is a hill in Norway renowned for its distinctive hole piercing straight through the hillside (not a printing error!). The hill is so named after a tale of a Troll whos hat was pierced by an arrow, whilst saving a beautiful woman from the amorous advances of a less-mannered troll. The discarded hat turned to stone and formed the hill! Date: circa 1908

EDITORS COMMENTS
Torghatten, a natural wonder and legendary landmark in Norway, is depicted in this photograph from the early 1900s. Located in the municipality of Brønnøy, Torghatten is renowned for its distinctive hole piercing straight through the hillside. The name Torghatten translates to 'Troll's Hat,' a reference to a captivating local legend. According to the tale, a Troll named Torgeir resided atop the hill, guarding the fjord below. He was known for his menacing presence and amorous advances towards the beautiful women who lived in the valley. One day, a brave young woman managed to escape his clutches, fleeing towards the safety of the mountains. Pursued relentlessly by Torgeir, she was cornered near the foot of the hill. Desperate for her safety, a local hero took aim with his bow and arrow and pierced the troll's hat, causing him to retreat in anger and embarrassment. The discarded hat turned to stone, forming the distinctive hole in the hillside that we see today. This photograph, taken circa 1908, captures the breathtaking beauty of Torghatten and the surrounding landscape. The natural tunnel, created by the hole, adds an intriguing element to the already mystical hill. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to imagine the tales of old and the legends that have shaped the culture and history of Norway.
