EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the bustling nightlife scene of London on the eve of the First World War, Murray's Supper Club in Beak Street stood out as one of the newest and most popular destinations for members and guests seeking an evening of entertainment and socialization. Opened by Canadian entrepreneur Jack May in 1913, Murray's was part of a wave of late-opening supper clubs that were springing up around the city. The top half of this photograph captures the club's dance floor, where couples glide and twirl in the dimly lit space, lost in the moment as the music plays. The ornate, mirrored walls reflect the dancers and the flickering light of the chandeliers, creating an atmosphere of glamour and excitement. The bottom half of the photograph reveals the club's members and guests, dressed in their finest attire, mingling and chatting over drinks at the tables. The air is thick with the scent of cigar smoke and the sound of laughter and conversation. The elegantly set tables, adorned with crystal glasses and silverware, attest to the club's sophistication and attention to detail. Murray's continued to be a beloved destination until 1923, when it closed and reopened as Blanchard's. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of London's nightlife and the social scene of the early 20th century, a time when Murray's Supper Club provided a space for people to come together and enjoy themselves amidst the uncertainty of the world around them.
