EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print commemorates the British naval victory at the Battle of Sluys, which took place on June 24, 1372. The battle marked a significant turning point in the Hundred Years War between England and France. King Edward III of England, determined to reclaim his lost territories in France, led a formidable naval force of over 100 ships against the French fleet, which was larger but less experienced. The battle took place in the estuary of the River Sluys, near the North Sea, and began with a fierce engagement between the English longships and the French galleys. The English longbows proved to be a decisive factor, with their arrows decimating the French ranks. The tide then turned in favor of the English when a breach was made in the French dam, which had been constructed to prevent the English from advancing up the river. With the dam breached, the English were able to launch a successful assault on the French army, which was caught off guard and routed. The Battle of Sluys was a resounding victory for King Edward III and marked the end of French dominance in the North Sea. It also boosted English morale and paved the way for further military successes in the Hundred Years War. This print captures the excitement and heroism of the English sailors and soldiers as they celebrate their victory over the French, with the defeated enemy fleet visible in the background. The intricate detail and vibrant colors bring the scene to life, making it a fascinating and captivating addition to any historical collection.
