EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the tragic tale of Nessus and Dejanira, a mythological story deeply rooted in ancient Greek mythology. The image captures the moment of betrayal and abduction, as the centaur Nessus, with his powerful and bestial form, seizes Herakles' (Hercules) beloved wife, Dejanira. Nessus, a centaur with the upper body of a man and the lower body of a horse, was once favored by the goddesses Hera and Demeter for his strength and handsomeness. However, his pride and deceitfulness led him to commit a series of transgressions, ultimately resulting in his downfall. In this myth, Hera, seeking revenge against Herakles for his many heroic deeds and unwavering loyalty to his wife, devised a plan. She sent Nessus to carry Dejanira across a river, promising him that he would be rewarded for his service. However, Nessus, blinded by his own desires, attempted to rape Dejanira during the crossing. When Herakles discovered the betrayal, he avenged his wife by killing Nessus. The print beautifully illustrates the moment before the confrontation, as Nessus, with a determined and sinister expression, grabs Dejanira, who looks back in fear and shock. The artist masterfully captures the contrasting emotions of the two figures and the tension of the scene. The lush greenery and natural surroundings serve as a backdrop to the unfolding drama, highlighting the raw power and passion of the mythological figures. This print is a testament to the rich storytelling tradition of ancient Greece and the enduring power of mythology to captivate and inspire us. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of pride, deceit, and betrayal, and the importance of loyalty and love in the face of adversity.
