EDITORS COMMENTS
Upright Annual Broom-Grass or Brome Grass, Bromus diandrus, is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Richard Duppa and published as part of his comprehensive work, "The Classes and Orders of the Linnaean System of Botany," published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown in London in 1816. Bromus diandrus is an annual grass species, characterized by its upright growth habit and slender, elongated spikes of small, delicate flowers. The inflorescence is composed of compact, cylindrical spikes, each bearing numerous, tiny, bisexual flowers. The grass blades are narrow, smooth, and usually hairless, with a distinctive green hue. The Linnaean System of Botany, developed by Carl Linnaeus, is the most widely used taxonomic system in the history of botany. It organizes all known plants into a hierarchical system of classes, orders, families, genera, and species based on shared morphological characteristics. This system revolutionized the way plants were classified and named, providing a standardized framework for botanical research and communication. Richard Duppa was an accomplished botanical illustrator, known for his meticulous attention to detail and accurate representation of his subjects. His illustrations, like the one of Upright Annual Broom-Grass or Brome Grass, were produced using the copperplate engraving technique, which involved transferring the image from a drawing onto a copper plate, etching the lines, and then printing the image using ink. The handcolouring process added an additional layer of detail and vibrancy to the final product, making each print a unique work of art.
