EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts a Plains Zebra (Equus quagga), also known as the Burchell's Zebra or the Cheval-tigre d'Afrique. The Plains Zebra is the most common of the nine subspecies of zebras and is native to Eastern and Southern Africa. This magnificent animal is easily distinguished by its distinctive black and white stripes, which serve as an effective camouflage against predators in the savannah. The Plains Zebra in this engraving is shown in its natural habitat, with its ears alert and its head turned towards the viewer. Its stripes are meticulously rendered in intricate detail, showcasing the skill of the engraver, Andreas Hoffer, and the illustrator, Christian Leinberger. The engraving is part of Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, also known as Kabinet van Zeldzaamheden der Natuur, published by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg in 1771. This work was a popular natural history publication of the time, featuring a wide range of exotic animals and plants from around the world. The Plains Zebra continues to be an iconic symbol of the African savannah and is an important species for conservation efforts. Its population has been impacted by habitat loss, poaching, and climate change, making it a vital focus for wildlife conservation organizations. This beautiful engraving serves as a reminder of the natural beauty and diversity of the African continent and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
