EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures General Maxwell D. Taylor of the 101st US Airborne Division standing before the headquarters of his unit in Hiesville, Normandy on June 6, 1944, just hours after the D-Day landings. The headquarters, which had been carefully chosen and planned from a map while the troops were still in England, was operational by 9:00 a.m. on D-Day. General Taylor, a decorated military leader and future Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is seen here in his element, overseeing the strategic deployment of his troops in the early stages of the invasion. The image captures the intensity and determination of the Allied forces on this pivotal day in World War II history. The 101st Airborne Division played a crucial role in securing key positions and pushing inland from the Normandy beaches, ultimately contributing to the successful establishment of a foothold in Europe for the Allied forces. This powerful photograph is a testament to the bravery and leadership of General Taylor and the 101st Airborne Division during the D-Day invasion.
