EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the First American Cemetery Marker on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. Erected by the 2nd Platoon of the 607th Graves Registration Company on June 7, 1944, this marker signifies the first American battle burials in Europe during World War II. The graves, numbering approximately 457, were initially located on the beach to honor the fallen heroes. However, the team carefully moved the bodies to St. Laurent Cemetery during the night of June 10, to prevent demoralizing incoming troops and to minimize the risk of enemy fire. This solemn act of respect and honor paid tribute to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the early hours of the D-Day invasion. The marker stands as a testament to their valor and the enduring bond between the American people and the liberation of Europe.
