EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image, we find ourselves transported back to the 16th century, as we gaze upon the portrait of Claude de Lorraine, Duke of Guise. The Duke, born on December 24, 1527, was a prominent figure during the French Wars of Religion, serving as a military leader and statesman for the House of Guise. The meticulously crafted illustration, drawn and lithographed by Leopold Massard, is a stunning representation of the Duke's regal presence. The hand-coloured print, taken from the "Costumes Historiques de la France" portfolio by Paul Lacroix, showcases the Duke in his full splendor. He is depicted wearing an ornate doublet, adorned with intricate gold and silver embroidery, and a fur-trimmed cloak. The Duke's expression is serious yet confident, reflecting his strong leadership qualities. Claude de Lorraine rose to power under the auspices of King Henry II of France, becoming a favorite of the monarch. However, his fortunes changed when Henry II's successor, Francis II, came to power. The Duke was eventually assassinated on December 23, 1563, in the cathedral of Orléans, marking the end of the House of Guise's influence in France for several decades. This exquisite print serves as a testament to the Duke's legacy and the opulence of the French Renaissance court. The intricate details of the Duke's attire, the rich colors, and the regal bearing all contribute to a captivating visual representation of a pivotal figure in French history.
