EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing image, King Alfred the Great of Wessex is depicted in disguise, blending in with the Danish camp of Guthrum, leader of the Danes, in the year 878. Alfred, a skilled strategist and determined ruler, had been forced to retreat to the Isle of Athelney following a series of Danish invasions. Seeking intelligence on the enemy's plans, Alfred donned the garb of a minstrel, accompanied by his trusty harp, and infiltrated the Danish camp. The Danes, unaware of the cunning king among them, were engrossed in their preparations for the upcoming battle of Ethandun, later known as the Battle of Edington. King Alfred, using his disguise to gather vital information, observed their movements, strengths, and weaknesses. This clandestine mission proved to be a turning point in the conflict between Wessex and the Danes. Armed with the knowledge he had gained, Alfred rallied his forces and led them to a decisive victory against Guthrum's army. The Battle of Edington, fought on June 8, 878, marked the end of the Danish occupation of Wessex and secured Alfred's position as a formidable and respected leader. This evocative print, showcasing King Alfred's daring undercover mission, is a testament to the strategic brilliance and resilience of one of England's most legendary monarchs.
