Fleets of motorcyles at the outbreak of war
At the start of World War I the petrol-driven motor was used for the first time for haulage of big guns, ammunition wagons, food and baggage trains, Red Cross ambulances, as well as for the conveyance of troops at the front. At this time, motor cyclists offered to raise a corps, and the offer was gladly accepted by the War Office. EDITORS COMMENTS
At the dawn of the First World War in 1914, the petrol-driven motor revolutionized warfare as never before. Motor vehicles were employed for the first time for hauling big guns, ammunition wagons, food and baggage trains, Red Cross ambulances, and the conveyance of troops to the front lines. The photograph captures a significant moment in history, as motorcyclists, eager to contribute to the war effort, offered their services to the War Office. Their proposal was warmly welcomed, and this parade of hundreds of motorcycles represents the response to that call. The motorcycle corps, with its lines of gleaming bikes, would soon become an integral part of the war machine, playing a crucial role on both the home and the front lines. This image, taken at the outbreak of the Great War, is a testament to the spirit of innovation and determination that characterized the early days of this global conflict. The motorcycle, a symbol of freedom and adventure in peacetime, became a powerful tool of war, forever changing the face of military transportation.
