EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic beauty and regal presence of Catherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII of England. Born in 1512, Catherine was the daughter of Sir Thomas Parr and Maud Green, and was the stepdaughter of Katherine Parr, Queen Consort to Henry VIII from 1543 to 1546. After Katherine's untimely death, Henry, then in his mid-50s, sought to marry again, and Catherine, a widow with three children, became his bride in July 1543. The image of Catherine Parr presents a striking contrast to the earlier wives of Henry VIII, who were often portrayed as youthful and voluptuous. Catherine's mature, refined appearance and calm, intelligent expression reflect her status as a woman of substance and experience. Her elegant attire, with its high-necked gown and intricate lacing, speaks to the fashionable tastes of the Tudor court. Catherine's marriage to Henry VIII was marked by a deep and genuine affection, and she played a significant role in the education of the young Prince Edward, who would eventually succeed his father as King. Tragically, Catherine's tenure as queen was short-lived; she died in September 1548, just a few months after giving birth to her only child with Henry, a baby girl named Mary. This portrait of Catherine Parr offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who, despite the challenges and uncertainties of the Tudor court, managed to leave a lasting impact on English history as the mother of a future monarch.
