Sir P. Sidney, (1554-1586), 1830. Philip Sidney (1554-1586) English poet, courtier, scholar, and soldier, an aristocrat educated at Christ Church, Oxford and prominent figure of the Elizabethan age. In 1572 was sent to negotiate marriage between Elizabeth I and the Duc D Alencon, in 1586 was shot in the thigh at the Battle of Zutphen and died of gangrene 26 days later.
