EDITORS COMMENTS
The County Hunt Ball, held in the magnificent New Hall at Reading, Berkshire, in 1850, was a grand social event of the Victorian era. The handsome hall of the Literary, Scientific, and Mechanics' Institution was characteristically decorated for the occasion, with several pairs of noble antlers, groups of flowering plants and shrubs, and illuminated by means of elegant chandeliers. The superb room, measuring approximately 90 feet by 40 feet, boasted an elliptical ceiling and was lighted by eighteen large windows in the roof, providing an unbroken surface of wall around the entire room, except for the east end, which was ornamented by a handsome circular window of coloured glass. The music was excellent, with the effective band, under the direction of Mr. Ireland, performing with great spirit. The attendees, dressed in their finest evening attire, enjoyed the lively tunes and engaged in animated conversation. The ladies, with their elegant gowns and glowing complexions, looked radiant in the soft glow of the candles. The County Hunt Ball was a much-anticipated event in the social calendar, and the Illustrated London News captured the essence of the evening in this engraving, providing a glimpse into the grandeur and elegance of Victorian society.
