Cliff tombs of the lords of Assiut, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood

Cliff tombs of the lords of Assiut, Egypt, 1905. One at the largest tombs which you see up there belonged to a powerful lord under the twelfth dynasty named Hepzefi. His tomb is of special interest because he recorded upon the walls of the chapel certain contracts which he had made with the priesthoods of the two temples in the town behind us, by virtue of which they were to furnish his tomb and his statue in the temple with certain supplies - bread, meat, wicks for illuminations at feasts and the like - in perpetuity after his death. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the ancient world of Egypt in 1905. The image showcases the magnificent cliff tombs of the lords of Assiut, a sight that is both awe-inspiring and mysterious. Underwood & Underwood, renowned for their stereoscopic photography, beautifully captured this moment in time. The largest tomb visible belonged to a powerful lord named Hepzefi from the twelfth dynasty. What makes his resting place particularly fascinating is the recording on its walls. Hepzefi documented contracts he had made with the priesthoods of two temples in Assiut town behind us. These agreements ensured that even after his death, his tomb and statue would receive essential supplies such as bread, meat, and wicks for illuminations during feasts. As we gaze at this photograph, we are transported into an era where noblemen held great influence over religious institutions and secured provisions for eternity through contractual arrangements. The sheer scale of these cliff tombs against the backdrop of breathtaking Egyptian landscapes reminds us of the grandeur and power once possessed by these ancient lords. This historical artifact not only captures a moment frozen in time but also offers insights into ancient Egyptian customs surrounding death and burial practices. It serves as a testament to our enduring fascination with Egypt's rich cultural heritage while highlighting Underwood & Underwood's skillful artistry in preserving history through their stereoscopic cards.
