EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Bridge Street Corner, Godalming, 1911" takes us back in time to the charming market town of Godalming in Surrey. The artist behind this masterpiece is Jamess Ogilvy, whose attention to detail and artistic vision beautifully capture the essence of this historic corner. Godalming holds a significant place in history as it is mentioned in the will of King Alfred the Great dating back to 899. In this document, both Godalming and Guildford are gifted to Alfred's nephew, AEthelwold. This connection with royalty adds an air of grandeur to this quaint town. Moreover, Godalming proudly claims its place as a pioneer by becoming the first town worldwide to have a public electricity supply installed in September 1881. This innovative achievement showcases Godalming's forward-thinking nature and commitment to progress. The photograph itself comes from James S. Ogilvy's book "A Pilgrimage In Surrey" published by George Routledge & Sons Limited in London during 1914. It serves as a visual testament to the historical significance and architectural beauty that defines Bridge Street Corner. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back over a century ago when horse-drawn carriages roamed these streets and bustling markets filled every corner. It reminds us of our rich heritage and invites us to appreciate the timeless charm that still resonates within Godalming today.
