Bolingbroke's False Homage to Richard II. at Flint Castle, 1836

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in English history - the infamous false homage paid by Henry Bolingbroke to King Richard II at Flint Castle in Wales. The scene depicts the treacherous act of deceit as Bolingbroke, Duke of Lancaster, kneels before his rightful monarch. Banished and disinherited by King Richard II, Bolingbroke cunningly returned to England with an army and seized the throne while Richard was away in Ireland. It was upon his return that Richard was captured at Flint Castle in 1399, marking the beginning of a tumultuous chain of events that would forever alter the course of British monarchy. The image showcases the imposing fortifications of Flint Castle, serving as a symbolic backdrop for this historic betrayal. A sense of tension fills the air as Bolingbroke feigns loyalty while secretly plotting his own ascension to power. The unknown creator skillfully captures this significant moment using intricate engravings and attention to detail. The composition draws our focus towards Bolingbroke's deceptive act while highlighting the grandeur and majesty befitting a king. This print serves as a reminder not only of one man's ambition but also of how power can corrupt even those closest to it. It immortalizes an event that shaped England's future and invites us to reflect on themes such as loyalty, deception, and political intrigue that continue to resonate throughout history.
