Arch at Colombo, Ceylon, on the occasion of the Royal Visit, from a sketch by one... 1876. Creator: Unknown
Arch at Colombo, Ceylon, on the occasion of the Royal Visit [of the Prince of Wales], from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. I saw pyramids of fruit eight feet high surrounding the bases of [triumphal] arches... the ingenious gentleman to whom the decorations of Colombo were confided bethought him of something new, and, as Ceylon is not only a great fruit store and conservatory of grandly painted flowers, but also the home of the elephant, he made arches of effigies of these magnificent creatures - arches of elephants composed of canvas and rich Oriental blossoms, arches representing the king of Ceylon beasts entwining trunks and tusks, and upraising their heads in order to let the Prince pass under...The shape of the animals has been well carried out, so much so that, when sketching, our Artist saw a horse shy as it came up'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Arch at Colombo, Ceylon: A Spectacular Sight during the Royal Visit of 1876 This image captures the Arch at Colombo, Ceylon, during the historic Royal Visit of the Prince of Wales in 1876. The sketch, created by an unidentified artist, beautifully conveys the grandeur and exotic allure of this momentous occasion. As the Prince approached Colombo, the capital city of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), he was greeted by a breathtaking sight. Pyramids of fruit eight feet high adorned the bases of triumphal arches, a testament to the region's abundant produce. But the ingenious gentleman in charge of the decorations sought to outdo himself. In a land renowned for its grandly painted flowers and the majestic elephant, he created arches of elephant effigies, crafted from canvas and rich Oriental blossoms. These arches showcased the splendid forms of the king of Ceylon beasts, their trunks and tusks entwined, offering a regal welcome to the Prince. The artist, as he sketched, was so captivated by the scene that even a horse was startled as it approached, momentarily halting in awe of the magnificent spectacle. This evocative image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1876, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Ceylon and the extraordinary welcome extended to the Prince during his visit. The Arch at Colombo stands as a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of its people, blending the natural beauty of the land with the grandeur of royal tradition.
