The 3 Customers, 1878, (c1918). Creator: Randolph Caldecott

The 3 Customers, 1878, (c1918). Three women arrive at John Gilpins drapers shop just as he is about to set off. He delays leaving to serve them. John Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from the late 18th century, depicting three female customers arriving at John Gilpin's drapers shop. The women have arrived just as John Gilpin is about to set off on a journey, but he delays his departure to serve them. This humorous moment is inspired by the comic ballad "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" written by William Cowper in 1782. In the ballad, based on a real-life character, John Gilpin, a draper himself, gets separated from his family during a horse-riding mishap and ends up in Ware instead of reaching Edmonton. The image beautifully portrays the essence of this amusing story. The photograph showcases an avenue with quaint shops lining both sides of the street. It provides us with a glimpse into life in 18th-century Britain and highlights the importance of trade and commerce during that time. Creator Randolph Caldecott skillfully captures the humor and charm of this scene through his monochrome depiction. His attention to detail brings out the personalities of each woman as they engage with John Gilpin before he embarks on his unexpected adventure. This print serves as an intriguing historical artifact that not only reflects English country life but also celebrates British wit and storytelling traditions.
