MAN464427 Jaffa, from the series Buy Jaffa Oranges (colour litho) by Newbould, Frank (1887-1951); Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd for HMSO;
Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Jaffa, from the series Buy Jaffa Oranges" by Frank Newbould takes us on a visual journey to the vibrant city of Jaffa. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd for HMSO, this artwork is part of Manchester Art Gallery's remarkable collection of artist-designed posters. The British government's Empire Marketing Board aimed to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire. Through an extensive poster campaign, they sought to cultivate a sense of empire-consciousness among Britons. Manchester Art Gallery acquired over 200 such posters in the 1930s, showcasing powerful images that depict people, places, and products from across the vast empire. However, viewing these posters today raises thought-provoking questions about the legacy of imperialism. While they capture moments in history and celebrate cultural diversity within the empire, they also reflect uncomfortable beliefs held during that era. In this particular print, we are transported to Jaffa with its bustling streets and enchanting architecture. The vivid colors bring life to every corner while highlighting crates filled with succulent oranges – a symbol of prosperity and trade within the empire. As we admire this artwork from Fine Art Finder's Bridgeman Images collection at Manchester Art Gallery, it invites us to contemplate our relationship with history and how it shapes our present understanding of colonialism's impact on society.
