EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the late 19th century and witness a unique maritime tradition known as "The baptism of the line". The scene depicts a sailor donning an old cassock, standing tall before his fellow crew members. With great fervor, he delivers an impassioned speech, rallying the sailors for what is about to unfold. Each member of the crew holds a bucket filled with water, their weapons in this symbolic ceremony. As they pour the water onto either the moss or a young sailor who is crossing the imaginary line of Ecuador for the first time, they partake in an ancient ritual that marks their passage into uncharted waters. This remarkable engraving by E. Riou was created to illustrate Edouard Andre's voyage through equinoxial America in 1875-1876. Andre, entrusted with a mission by the French government, embarked on an expedition that took him through Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. As we gaze upon this image from yesteryear captured by Leonard de Selva's lens, we are reminded of both the rich history and adventurous spirit that once permeated these seafaring journeys. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and exploration while honoring age-old traditions passed down through generations of sailors. Through artistry and storytelling combined within this single frame frozen in time, we can almost hear echoes of those passionate speeches delivered at sea and feel droplets of water cascading down upon us as if we too were present during "The baptism of the line.
