Vivid Auroras in Jupiters Atmosphere
Astronomers are using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to study auroras -- stunning light shows in a planets atmosphere -- on the poles of the largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter. This observation program is supported by measurements made by NASAs Juno spacecraft, currently on its way to Jupiter. Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, is best known for its colorful storms, the most famous being the Great Red Spot. Now astronomers have focused on another beautiful feature of the planet, using Hubbles ultraviolet capabilities. The extraordinary vivid glows shown in the new observations are known as auroras. They are created when high-energy particles enter a planets atmosphere near its magnetic poles and collide with atoms of gas. As well as producing beautiful images, this program aims to determine how various components of Jupiters auroras respond to different conditions in the solar wind, a stream of charged particles ejected from the sun

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the mesmerizing beauty of vivid auroras in Jupiter's atmosphere. Astronomers, armed with the powerful NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, have embarked on a mission to study these stunning light shows that illuminate the poles of the largest planet in our solar system. Assisting in this endeavor are measurements gathered by NASAs Juno spacecraft as it journeys towards Jupiter. While Jupiter is renowned for its vibrant storms, such as the iconic Great Red Spot, astronomers have now turned their attention to another captivating feature - its auroras. Utilizing Hubble's ultraviolet capabilities, they have unveiled an array of extraordinary and vivid glows emanating from the planet's atmosphere. Auroras occur when energetic particles penetrate a planet's magnetic poles and collide with gas atoms within its atmosphere. These collisions give birth to magnificent displays of light that captivate observers both near and far. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, this observation program seeks to unravel how different components of Jupiters' auroras react under varying conditions in the solar wind – a stream of charged particles expelled from our Sun. By studying these interactions, scientists hope to gain valuable insights into the complex dynamics at play within Jupiter's atmospheric phenomena. This awe-inspiring image serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our celestial neighbors and showcases nature’s ability to create breathtaking wonders even millions of miles away from Earth.
