EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the aftermath of a devastating air raid on Newton Abbot Station during World War II. On that fateful day, August 20th, 1940, three German planes unleashed their destructive power upon this bustling railway hub. The image vividly depicts the harrowing consequences of both bomb damage and relentless machine gun fire. The scene is one of utter devastation as goods wagons lay twisted and mangled amidst the ruins. The once-thriving station now stands as a haunting reminder of the horrors inflicted by war. Tragically, this merciless attack claimed the lives of 60 individuals while leaving many others seriously injured. Not only were parts of the station completely obliterated, but also numerous locomotives, passenger carriages, and goods wagons fell victim to this onslaught. A total of 15 locomotives, 52 passenger carriages, and 22 goods wagons suffered irreparable damage in this cataclysmic event. As we reflect upon this photograph from STEAM Museum of the GWR (Great Western Railway), it serves as a somber testament to the resilience and sacrifices made during wartime.
