EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the Scott Polar Research Institute, we are transported back to a momentous expedition in 1930. The image captures four intrepid explorers - Gino Watkins, Quintin Riley, Martin Lindsay, and John Rymill - as they embark on a challenging climb amidst the unforgiving Arctic landscape. Led by the indomitable Henry George (Gino) Watkins, these brave men were part of the British Arctic Air Route Expedition. Their mission was to chart an air route over Greenland's treacherous ice cap, paving the way for future aviation endeavors in this remote region. As we gaze at this frozen tableau frozen in time, our eyes are drawn to their determined faces and laden figures. Each man carries a heavy burden: boxes filled with supplies, a barrel that holds precious sustenance or equipment perhaps, and bags containing essential provisions for survival. The steep rocky snow-covered slope before them seems almost insurmountable. Yet their unwavering spirit pushes them forward step by arduous step. It is through such sheer determination that these explorers would conquer some of nature's most formidable challenges. This photograph not only serves as a testament to human resilience but also offers us a glimpse into an era when exploration held boundless possibilities and unknown frontiers beckoned with irresistible allure. Preserved by University of Cambridge SPRI (Scott Polar Research Institute), this remarkable image reminds us of the courage and audacity exhibited by those who dared venture into uncharted territories in pursuit of knowledge and discovery.
