Computer artwork depicting embryo paternity test

Embryo paternity testing. Computer artwork of a paternity test of an embryo (at upper right). A sample of DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid (orange & red strand), is taken from the embryo and its parents. The genetic code formed from the four bases (at bottom right) on this DNA is revealed by a process called electrophoresis. The DNA bands are transfe- rred onto an autoradiograph (white sheet) for comparison. The embryos DNA comes partly from each parent as the fathers sperm fertilizes the mothers egg (top left). Therefore any of the embryos DNA bands, or genetic markers (blue rectangles, lower left), which do not match those of its mother must match those of its father

EDITORS COMMENTS
This computer artwork showcases the process of embryo paternity testing. At the upper right corner, an embryo is depicted undergoing a paternity test through DNA analysis. A sample of DNA, represented by the orange and red strand, is taken from both the embryo and its parents for comparison. The genetic code formed from the four bases on this DNA is revealed using electrophoresis, as shown at the bottom right. This technique separates and visualizes different fragments of DNA based on their size and charge. The resulting bands are then transferred onto an autoradiograph, seen as a white sheet in this artwork. In order to determine paternity, it is crucial to compare the genetic markers or DNA bands (depicted as blue rectangles in the lower left) between mother and embryo. As fertilization occurs when a father's sperm combines with a mother's egg (top left), any genetic markers that do not match those of the mother must correspond to those of the father. This intricate portrayal beautifully merges artistry with scientific concepts such as biochemistry, genetics, and biotechnology. It highlights how advancements in DNA research have enabled us to unravel complex mysteries surrounding human origins and relationships through techniques like paternity testing.
