Broadclub cuttlefish
Male broadclub cuttlefish (Sepia latimanus) displaying threat colouration to another male (not seen). The bands of black and white are used to intimidate other males during the breeding season. Cuttlefish can rapidly change the colour of their skin by dilating or contracting pigment cells called chromatophores. This cuttlefish preys largely on crustaceans, which it catches with a quick strike with its two tentacles (not seen). These are usually kept hidden amongst its eight arms, as here. This cuttlefish is found in the tropical Indo-Pacific region. It may reach a length of around 45 centimetres. Photographed off Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing display of a male broadclub cuttlefish, known as Sepia latimanus. The intricate bands of black and white adorning its body serve as a powerful intimidation tactic during the breeding season, aimed at other males who dare to challenge its dominance. Cuttlefish possess an extraordinary ability to rapidly alter the coloration of their skin by manipulating pigment cells called chromatophores. This remarkable adaptation allows them to blend seamlessly with their surroundings or communicate various emotions and intentions. In this image, we witness the cuttlefish's hidden weaponry – two tentacles used for swift strikes against its primary prey: crustaceans. These tentacles are cleverly concealed among its eight arms, showcasing nature's ingenuity in equipping this creature for survival. Indigenous to the tropical Indo-Pacific region, this particular species can grow up to 45 centimeters long. Its presence in Indonesian waters adds another layer of intrigue and allure to this already fascinating marine ecosystem. As we delve into the depths of our oceans through photography like this one, we gain a deeper understanding of animal behavior and appreciate the diverse array of life forms that inhabit our planet's vast underwater realm. Let us cherish these glimpses into nature's wonders and strive towards preserving such precious habitats for generations to come.
