1838 William Smith father of UK Geology
William Smith (23 March 1769 - 28 August 1839) aged 69 from a painting by M.Foureau, engraved and first published in the " Memoirs" of W. Smith" 1844 with later tinting. Smith was a self taught English geologist who, though not appreciated until late in life, is now seen as the father of English Geology. In 1815 he published the first large scale coloured map of the geology of the UK. It showed the various rock types and is quite accurate even by todays standards. He also drew pioneering geological cross sections of Britain showing the strata. His maps were plagiarised and, because of his relatively humble origins, he was not at first admitted into the learned societies. He suffered financial hardship, spending time in debtors prison and working as an itinerant surveyor. Sir John Johnstone employed him and, realising his accomplishments, finally lead Smith to acceptance and honours

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed William Smith, widely regarded as the father of UK Geology. Born in 1769 and passing away at the age of 69, Smith's contributions to geology were not fully recognized until later in his life. The image is a reproduction of a painting by M. Foureau, originally engraved and published in "Memoirs" by W. Smith in 1844, with later tinting added. Smith was a self-taught English geologist who revolutionized the field with his groundbreaking work. In 1815, he unveiled the first large-scale colored map depicting the geological makeup of the United Kingdom. Even by today's standards, this map remains remarkably accurate and detailed, showcasing various rock types across the country. Despite his remarkable achievements, Smith faced numerous challenges throughout his career. His maps were shamelessly plagiarized, and due to his humble origins, he initially struggled to gain acceptance into learned societies. Financial hardships plagued him as well; he even endured time in debtors prison while working as an itinerant surveyor. However, fate smiled upon Smith when Sir John Johnstone recognized his exceptional accomplishments and employed him. This pivotal moment led to widespread recognition for Smith's invaluable contributions to geology and eventually earned him honors within scientific circles. Paul D. Stewart's expertly captured photograph immortalizes this influential figure from British history—a man whose dedication reshaped our understanding of Earth's geological composition forever.
