Steam roller outside the Red Lion, Truro, Cornwall. October 1913
Image showing an Aveling & Porter steam roller outside the Red Lion Inn on Boscawen Street in Truro. It is probably about to move the cabmans shelter. Aveling & Porter were a British agricultural engine and steam roller manufacturer started in 1862 by Thomas Aveling and Richard Thomas Porter producing their first steam engine in 1865. The company became the largest manufacturer of steam rollers in the world but by 1900 had gone in to decline as American companies started to produce more efficient machinery. EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to October 1913 with this print capturing a moment outside the historic Red Lion Inn in Truro, Cornwall. Standing proudly in front of the inn is an Aveling & Porter steam roller, a testament to the industrial advancements of its time. This British agricultural engine and steam roller manufacturer, founded by Thomas Aveling and Richard Thomas Porter in 1862, had become renowned worldwide for their innovative machinery. In this scene, it appears that the steam roller is poised to move the cabmans shelter nearby. The bustling street showcases Cornish life as men and boys gather curiously around the impressive machine while a young girl gazes at it with wide-eyed wonder. The surrounding shops add charm and character to this snapshot of early 20th-century Truro. The significance of this image extends beyond its visual appeal; it also serves as a reminder of changing times. By 1913, American companies were already producing more efficient machinery, leading Aveling & Porter's decline from being once hailed as the largest manufacturer of steam rollers globally. It invites us to reflect on how far we've come while appreciating our heritage.
