A view of the front of Carlyon Bay Hotel after the fire in 1931, St Austell, Cornwall. 27th-28th December 1931

" Built in 1925, this was the first hotel at Carlyon Bay and was originally called the St Austell Bay Hotel. The hotel quickly became a fashionable choice with movie stars and celebrities and was frequented by a famous Royal visitor, Edward, then Prince of Wales, and his future wife, Mrs Wallis Simpson. The building suffered the devastating fire on 27th December 1931. Locals who rushed to the scene to help were met with the sight of furniture being frantically thrown from the windows to save it from the flames. During the war years, two boys schools from Canterbury, The Kings School and St Edmund s, were evacuated to the hotel to escape the Blitz. In March 1944, General Montgomery came to the hotel to inspect the schools cadet force. (In April 2015, a special 70th Anniversary Reunion was hosted at the hotel for the surviving evacuees and their partners). There was considerable excitement when Sir Winston Churchill stayed at the hotel with his wife Clementine in 1953. The hotel became part of the Brend Group in 1982". Source: Brend Hotels, 2018. It remains a top class hotel and boasts a championship golf course. Photographer: Probably Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the front view of Carlyon Bay Hotel after a devastating fire in 1931. Originally known as the St Austell Bay Hotel, this magnificent establishment was built in 1925 and quickly gained popularity among movie stars, celebrities, and even royalty. The future King Edward VIII, accompanied by his beloved Mrs Wallis Simpson, frequented this luxurious hotel during their courtship. The image showcases the aftermath of the tragic fire that occurred on December 27th, leaving locals stunned as they rushed to assist. Desperate attempts were made to salvage furniture from the flames by throwing it out of windows. Despite this setback, Carlyon Bay Hotel played an important role during World War II when it provided refuge for two boys' schools evacuated from Canterbury to escape the relentless Blitz bombings. In March 1944, General Montgomery himself visited the hotel to inspect the cadet force from these schools. A special reunion was held at Carlyon Bay Hotel in April 2015 to commemorate its crucial role as an evacuation center seventy years prior. Throughout its history, this iconic hotel has welcomed distinguished guests such as Sir Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine in 1953. In 1982, it became part of the prestigious Brend Group while still maintaining its reputation as a top-class destination with a championship golf course. Photographed by Arthur William Jordan (not associated with any company), this historical print serves as a testament to both tragedy and resilience within Cornwall's rich heritage.
