Photo Prints from Royal Cornwall Museum
Railway Station, St Austell, Cornwall. July 1990
St Austell station in the 1990s when the gardens and flower beds won awards. The original footbridge, which dates from 1882, was removed in 2019 after a modern, fully accessible bridge was built over the line. Owing to the age and architecture of the original bridge, campaigners were keen to ensure that it was not demolished. Working with the Railway Trust, Network Rail was able to secure a new home for the bridge as part of the Helston Heritage Railway. The photograph was taken for the 1991 book The Station Now Standing written by railway enthusiast Bill Pertwee, of the Dads Army TV show. Photographer: Jonathan Barker

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of St Austell Railway Station in Cornwall during July 1990. In this nostalgic snapshot, the station's gardens and flower beds are proudly displaying their award-winning splendor. The original footbridge, a remarkable architectural gem dating back to 1882, can be seen gracing the scene. Fast forward to 2019 when progress called for a modern and fully accessible bridge over the railway line. Faced with concerns about demolishing such an iconic structure, passionate campaigners joined forces with the Railway Trust and Network Rail to find a new home for this piece of history. Ultimately, it found its place within Helston Heritage Railway. The photograph was taken by Jonathan Barker for "The Station Now Standing" a book written by Bill Pertwee - renowned railway enthusiast and beloved actor from the classic TV show Dad's Army. Through his lens, Barker beautifully captured not only the essence of St Austell Station but also its Victorian charm that harkens back to an era when Great Western Railways reigned supreme. In this image, one can admire more than just lamp posts or palm trees; it encapsulates Cornish heritage intertwined with railway nostalgia. It serves as a poignant reminder of how historical preservation efforts can triumph in ensuring that our past remains alive in our present-day world.
