A diver holds his mask on a small boat on Yangon River after searching for coal
A diver holds his mask on a small boat on Yangon River after searching for coal and iron from sunken ships July 10, 2013. Every morning and evening during high tide, up to 40 boats of different shapes and sizes with crews of between four and eight people leave the former capital for the dangerous job of salvaging items from Yangon Rivers muddy waters. Wearing flimsy-looking gas masks attached to rubber water pipe, the divers jump into the water in search of coal and iron from sunken ships to be sold later. Some divers have lost their lives on the job when their ropes break or when they get caught in fishing nets and hooks. Divers say each boat earns about $1000 a month in this tiring and lethal job. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken on July 10,2013, we witness the perilous and exhausting life of a diver on Yangon River in Myanmar. The image shows a diver clutching his mask tightly while seated on a small boat. This simple act symbolizes the constant danger these brave individuals face as they search for coal and iron from sunken ships. Every morning and evening, up to 40 boats embark on this treacherous mission during high tide. These vessels vary in shape and size but share one common goal - salvaging valuable items from the murky depths of Yangon River's waters. Equipped with flimsy-looking gas masks attached to rubber water pipes, divers plunge into the river hoping to find treasures that can be sold later. However, this job comes at a great cost. Some divers have tragically lost their lives when their ropes break or become entangled in fishing nets and hooks lurking beneath the surface. Despite these risks, each boat manages to earn around $1000 per month. This photograph captures not only the dangerous nature of their work but also highlights the resilience and determination of these unsung heroes who risk everything for survival. It serves as a poignant reminder of both human vulnerability and strength in facing adversity head-on.
