EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming scene from the Dorking wartime nursery during World War II. On one special day each week, mothers eagerly gather to collect their children, arriving a little earlier and staying a bit later than usual. The observant matron noticed that these hardworking mothers, who leave their beloved children at the nursery to contribute to the war effort, are in need of some healthy relaxation. In response to this observation, arrangements were made for a Physical Training instructor to attend and provide recreational exercises for these dedicated women one evening per week. This initiative aimed not only to promote fitness and well-being but also offered them an opportunity for much-needed rejuvenation amidst the chaos of war. The enthusiasm among these resilient mothers was palpable as they eagerly participated in the physical education class provided by the instructor. With determination etched on their faces, they embraced this chance for self-care while balancing their responsibilities as both caregivers and workers. Set against the backdrop of August 30th, 1943, this snapshot encapsulates an era where women played vital roles on multiple fronts – caring for their children while actively contributing to the war effort. It serves as a testament to their strength and resilience during challenging times when child care and work intertwined seamlessly. This remarkable photograph by McLellan is not just an image frozen in time; it symbolizes empowerment, dedication, and unity among working mothers striving towards health and balance amidst adversity.
