The Gloster Aircraft Company was a British aircraft manufacturer from 1917 to 1963.
Founded as the Gloucestershire Aircraft Company Limited during the First World War, with the aircraft construction activities of H H Martyn & Co Ltd of Cheltenham, England it produced fighters during the war. It was renamed later as foreigners found Gloucestershire difficult to pronounce. It later became part of the Hawker Siddeley group and the Gloster name disappeared in 1963.
Gloster designed and built several fighters that equipped the British Royal Air Force (RAF) during the interwar years including the Gladiator, the RAFs last biplane fighter. The company built most of the wartime production of Hawker Hurricanes and Hawker Typhoons.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the impressive production of Hawker Typhoon fighters at one of the Gloster Aircraft Company factories in the West of England. The image showcases a pivotal moment in aircraft assembly, as male and female engineers meticulously work on the plane before fitting its engine. The Gloster Aircraft Company, established during World War I, played a significant role in British aviation history until its dissolution in 1963. Renamed due to pronunciation difficulties, it became renowned for designing and manufacturing various fighter planes for the Royal Air Force (RAF), including iconic models like the Gladiator and Hurricane. The Hawker Typhoon featured prominently during World War II, with this particular photograph capturing an aircraft known as R8970. On August 17th, 1944, Pilot R Gibson flew this Typhoon Ib on an unknown operation but was unable to complete his mission. Sadly, the plane crashed near Le Neubourn in France. Remarkably though, Gibson managed to evade capture. As we delve into history through this remarkable snapshot from March 1st, 1942 (not depicting the company itself), we are reminded of both triumphs and tragedies that unfolded within these factory walls. This print serves as a testament to not only technological advancements but also the dedication and bravery displayed by those who contributed to Britain's aerial defense during wartime.
