Architecture: Piccadilly to get $7 million space-age look
Architecture: Piccadilly to get $7 million space-age look. The building with the space age look, in this picture is no cover drawing for a science fiction magazine. It is a model of the new face of Piccadilly Circus - as it will look only three years from now. After no change for half a century -except for the arrival of bright-light advertising signs - Piccadilly is to have a major beauty treatment. As the first step of the London County Council development plan, the " Rainbow Corner" block, site of the famous American wartime club, is to be demolished. In its place will rise the ultra-modern, thirteen-storey building in the picture. A $7, 000, 000 contract for its construction was signed yesterday (27-10-4 ) and in that one building there will be shops, restaurants exhibition accommodation, offices and car-parking facilities. A futuristic note will be a crane at roof level to pick up display signs. In this way, an entire advertising display could be changed in twenty-four hours. To make way for the super-block, out will go all the buildings bounded by the Circus, Glasshouse-street, Denman-street, Sherwood-street and Shaftesbury-Avenue. Work on the project - launched jointly by the Legan and General Assurance Society and City Centre Properties - will begin on New Years Day. October 1959 P015091
