EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, the England football team stands united, exuding determination and camaraderie as they pose for a group photograph ahead of their match against Scotland in Newcastle. The year is 1941, amidst the chaos of World War II. Standing proudly in the front row are Eric Stephenson, who tragically lost his life serving in Burma later that year, Alf Hanson making his only appearance for England, Reg Mountford also making his sole international appearance, Ralph Birkett representing Newcastle United with pride, Joe Mercer from Everton showcasing his skills on the field, and Mr Amos Brook Hirst standing as vice chairman of the Football Association. The back row features notable figures such as Mr Stanley Rous, Secretary of the Football Association overseeing proceedings with utmost professionalism. Alongside him stand Joe Bacuzzi from Fulham FC displaying unwavering dedication to his country's cause; Ken Willingham and Len Goulden both hailing from Huddersfield Town; Tommy Lawton representing Everton with honor; Stan Cullis proudly donning Wolverhampton colors. At the very back center stands trainer Andy McCombie providing guidance to these talented athletes. Despite their valiant efforts on that fateful day at St James Park Stadium where Scotland emerged victorious with a scoreline of 3-2, this iconic image serves as a timeless reminder of unity and resilience during one of history's darkest periods.
