EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a unique moment in entertainment history. Dated March 27th, 1973, it showcases an audition held in Broad Court, off Drury Lane, London. The purpose of this audition was to find the perfect placid yet bored mongrel dog who could yawn on cue for a role in the rock musical "Two Gentlemen of Verona". This groundbreaking production opened at the Phoenix Theatre just under a month later on April 26th. The chosen dog for this extraordinary role was none other than Ponting, a six-year-old stray mongrel owned by Mrs. Daphne MacDonald from Chelsea. Ponting's ability to yawn on command made him the ideal candidate to play opposite renowned entertainer Benny Lee. In this snapshot frozen in time, we see one man sitting near a lamp post as he witnesses this audacious event unfold before his eyes. The image exudes nostalgia and transports us back to an era when animal actors were celebrated performers alongside their human counterparts. Ron Burton's expert photography perfectly encapsulates the essence of this remarkable occasion from the 1970s. It serves as a testament to the creativity and ingenuity that has always been present within the world of entertainment – even extending its reach to our furry friends like Ponting.
