The Ministry of Defence was making inquiries after a RAF Westland Puma helicopter landed

The Ministry of Defence was making inquiries after a RAF Westland Puma helicopter landed at Newcastle Airport to pick up a new motorcycle.
The pilot en route from RAF Odiham in Hampshire, to join a military exercise in Scotland refused to comment while he loaded the 250cc Honda onto the helicopter.
But a salesman from the Newcastle firm who sold the machine said that the pilot, Flight Lieutenant John Gill, had told him he had permission from his commanding officer to pick up the bike.
The seven ton Puma was originally supposed to land at a pre-arranged spot near Tynemouth Priory but bad visibility forced the helicopter to land at the airport.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to the 1980s as we witness an intriguing event unfold at Newcastle Airport. The Ministry of Defence is shown making inquiries after a RAF Westland Puma helicopter unexpectedly lands at the airport to pick up a new motorcycle. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant John Gill, remains tight-lipped during the process of loading the 250cc Honda onto the helicopter. However, a salesman from a local Newcastle firm reveals that Flight Lieutenant Gill had obtained permission from his commanding officer for this unusual mission. Originally scheduled to land near Tynemouth Priory, adverse weather conditions forced the seven-ton Puma helicopter to divert its course and touch down at Newcastle Airport instead. This unexpected turn of events has attracted attention and curiosity among onlookers who gather around in small groups with mixed age ranges. This image captures not only the convergence of two contrasting modes of transportation - an aircraft and a motorbike - but also offers us a glimpse into military operations during that era. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, our imaginations run wild with questions about what lies ahead for Flight Lieutenant Gill and his extraordinary cargo aboard that majestic RAF Westland Puma helicopter.
