Passers-by stop on Cenarth Bridge to look at the coracle men plying their craft down

Passers-by stop on Cenarth Bridge to look at the coracle men plying their craft down the Teifi. Following a pattern evolved over two thousand years ago, coracle builders construct the oval, basket-shaped boats that were being used by ancient Britons when Caesar invaded the island. Willow and hazel rods are bent into shape and covered with tarred calico, making a small, light craft in which a single paddler sits. They are used mainly by salmon fishers along remote Welsh rivers, and coracle men have been responsible for adding measurably to Britains fish supply during the war. When conditions are favourable the men often work for 19 hours a day. Circa 1945

Captivated by Tradition - Passers-by Enthralled by Ancient Craftsmanship on Cenarth Bridge

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print, we are transported back to the 1940s in rural Wales. Passers-by have paused on Cenarth Bridge, their curiosity piqued as they witness a mesmerizing sight unfold before them. The coracle men skillfully ply their craft down the Teifi River, following a time-honored pattern that has endured for over two thousand years. The coracles themselves are marvels of ingenuity and simplicity. Constructed using willow and hazel rods bent into an oval shape, these basket-like boats were once used by ancient Britons during Caesar's invasion of the island. Covered with tarred calico, these small and lightweight vessels accommodate only a single paddler. These coracle men play a vital role in sustaining Britain's fish supply, particularly salmon fishing along remote Welsh rivers. Even during wartime conditions when resources were scarce, these dedicated fishermen worked tirelessly for up to 19 hours a day when favorable conditions allowed. This evocative image captures not just the scene itself but also echoes the resilience and dedication of those who continue to honor age-old traditions amidst changing times. It serves as a poignant reminder of our connection to history and how it shapes our present-day practices.
