EDITORS COMMENTS
This elegant oval portrait depicts Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-1751), the eldest son of King George II and father of George III. Born in London on January 20, 1707, Frederick was the heir apparent to the British throne until his father's death in 1727. However, his father's favorite, the Duke of Newcastle, manipulated George II into changing his mind and designating the younger Prince William as his successor instead. Frederick, known for his strong character and passion for the arts, was deeply disappointed by this decision and spent the rest of his life in opposition to his father and the government. He was a patron of the arts, music, and literature, and his court was renowned for its intellectual and cultural achievements. This portrait, likely painted around 1751, shows Frederick in his prime, with a serious yet thoughtful expression. He is dressed in the robes of the Order of the Garter, one of the most prestigious orders of chivalry in the British monarchy. The artist is believed to be Mary Moser or Mary Beale, two prominent British portrait painters of the time. Frederick's life was marked by personal tragedy as well. He was married twice, first to Augusta of Saxe-Gotha in 1736, who died in childbirth in 1737. His second marriage, to Princess Augusta of Saxe-Meiningen in 1736, produced 15 children, including the future King George III. Despite his personal and political disappointments, Frederick's influence on British culture and the arts remains significant to this day. His patronage of artists, musicians, and writers helped to establish the foundations of a vibrant cultural scene in Britain, and his legacy continues to inspire and intrigue historians and artists alike.
