EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the infamous event known as the Assault on the Prison and Killing of Vinuesa, which took place in Madrid, Spain, in the early 19th century. The central figure in this chaotic scene is Matías de Vinuesa, a prominent absolutist and military commander during the reign of King Ferdinand VII. Vinuesa was a fervent supporter of the absolute monarchy and played a key role in the suppression of the liberal uprising known as the Trienio Liberal. However, his loyalty to the monarchy was put to the test when he was imprisoned in the Royal Alcazar on false charges of treason in 1820. Despite his imprisonment, Vinuesa remained a symbol of resistance for the absolutist forces. On the night of October 2, 1821, a group of absolutist men, led by the Duke of Rioseco, stormed the prison with the intention of freeing Vinuesa and other imprisoned absolutists. The engraving captures the moment of the assault, with men brandishing swords and guns, breaking down the prison gates, and fighting their way through the guards. Vinuesa himself is shown in the center, dressed in military attire and surrounded by his loyal followers. The successful assault on the prison marked a turning point in the struggle between the absolutists and the liberals. Vinuesa and his fellow prisoners were freed, and the absolutist forces regained control of Madrid. However, the event also highlighted the growing discontent with the absolute monarchy and set the stage for the final phase of the Spanish War of Independence. This engraving is a powerful reminder of the complex political dynamics of early 19th-century Spain and the sacrifices made by individuals in the name of their beliefs. It is a valuable historical document that sheds light on the turbulent period of Spanish history known as the Desamortización and the transition from the Old Regime to the modern era.
