EDITORS COMMENTS
Victor Hugo: A Literary Exile in Guernsey (1802-1885) This evocative photograph captures the legendary French poet and novelist, Victor Hugo, in deep concentration as he writes in his study at Hauterville House, Guernsey. The image transports us back in time to the period of Hugo's exile from his native land, between 1855 and 1870. Born on February 26, 1802, in Besançon, France, Hugo's literary career began in earnest in the 1820s. By the mid-19th century, he had become a prominent figure in French literature, known for his poetic masterpieces such as "Les Contes du temps passé" (Tales of Bygone Days) and "Les Chants du crépuscule" (The Songs of the Twilight). However, his political activism and outspoken criticism of the French monarchy led to his exile. Hugo chose Guernsey, a British Crown dependency in the English Channel, as his refuge. Hauteville House, located in the picturesque village of St. Peter Port, became his sanctuary. The house, which he shared with his wife Adèle and their three children, offered him the tranquility and solitude he needed to continue his literary pursuits. Despite the challenges of exile, Hugo remained prolific. He wrote some of his most famous works during this period, including "Les Misérables," "Toilers of the Sea," and "The Man Who Laughs." The study in this photograph, with its bookshelves filled with volumes and the warm, inviting fireplace, serves as a testament to Hugo's unwavering dedication to his craft. The image of Hugo, deep in thought, writing in his Guernsey study, encapsulates the spirit of a man who, though exiled from his homeland, never lost his passion for literature and his commitment to his art.
