Tyneham House
The deserted Tyneham House, in the village of Tyneham, on the Dorset coast. The village and surrounding area was commandeered by the War Office in late 1943, to be used as firing ranges. Originally intended as a temporary arrangement, it was made more permanent and the area has used for military training ever since. This Elizabethan manor house fell into ruin and little now remains. Date: 1949

EDITORS COMMENTS
Tyneham House: A Haunting Reminder of Dorset's Military Past This evocative photograph captures the desolate beauty of Tyneham House, an Elizabethan manor situated in the quaint village of Tyneham on the Dorset coast. The image, taken in 1949, reveals the forlorn state of this once magnificent dwelling, which now lies in ruins. The history of Tyneham House is deeply intertwined with the military history of the region. In late 1943, the War Office commandeered the village and its surrounding area for use as firing ranges. Originally intended as a temporary arrangement, the military training grounds have remained in place ever since. As a result, Tyneham House and the village have been deserted for over seven decades. The haunting image of Tyneham House serves as a poignant reminder of the history and heritage that has been lost to the relentless march of military training. The Elizabethan manor, with its intricate stonework and grandiose facade, once stood proudly as a symbol of Dorset's rich past. Now, its crumbling walls and shattered windows speak of a time long gone. The village of Tyneham, with its abandoned cottages and church, stands eerily silent, a ghostly reminder of the people who once called it home. The Dorset coastline, once a place of beauty and tranquility, now echoes with the sounds of military drills and gunfire. As we gaze upon this image of Tyneham House, we are reminded of the complex relationship between history, heritage, and the military. The ruins of this once-great manor house stand as a testament to the past, a reminder of the stories and memories that have been lost, and a call to preserve the rich history and heritage of Dorset for future generations.
