EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Tsukuba, a Japanese battlecruiser launched in 1905, moored in Yokosuka Bay. The Tsukuba was a proud addition to the Imperial Japanese Navy, representing the cutting edge of naval technology at the time. However, even as this image was taken, the Tsukuba was beginning to show its age. By 1917, the Tsukuba would become a tragic footnote in maritime history. The Tsukuba was a steam-powered warship, displacing over 12,000 tons and armed with a main battery of twelve 12-inch guns. It saw action during the Russo-Japanese War of 1905, where it played a key role in the decisive naval Battle of Tsushima. However, by the early 20th century, the Tsukuba and other pre-dreadnought battleships were becoming obsolete. Despite its aging status, the Tsukuba continued to serve in the Imperial Japanese Navy, transporting troops and supplies between various ports. But on July 31, 1917, tragedy struck. A fire broke out in the Tsukuba's magazine, causing a massive explosion that sank the battlecruiser in Yokosuka Bay. The cause of the fire remains unclear, but it is believed that it may have been caused by a spark from a welding operation. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the Tsukuba's storied past and its tragic end. The image captures the battlecruiser in its final days, a proud symbol of Japan's naval heritage that was ultimately unable to withstand the march of time and technology.
