EDITORS COMMENTS
In the early 20th century, the sensual and passionate dance known as the Tango was met with controversy and even outright bans in various parts of Europe, including Germany. In an effort to understand the steps and movements of this forbidden dance, the Halle police in Germany sought the expertise of a renowned ballet master, named Crugeri. In this photograph from 1913, Crugeri is seen demonstrating the Tango for a group of officers in a police station. With a serious expression and focused gaze, he leads his partner through the intricate footwork and fluid body movements that defined the dance. The officers watch intently, taking notes and studying the demonstration carefully. The Tango had been gaining popularity in Europe since its origins in the late 19th century, but its provocative and suggestive nature led to its being banned in some places due to moral concerns. The dance was often associated with the lower classes and immigrant communities, and its close contact and provocative movements were seen as indecent and immoral. Despite the controversy, the Tango continued to spread and evolve, eventually becoming a staple of ballroom dance and a symbol of passion and sensuality. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the efforts of the Halle police to understand and suppress the dance, and the role of ballet master Crugeri in preserving its legacy.
