Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey & Ottoman Princes

Celebrating the new Sultan. Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey (1844 - 1918). Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1909 until his death in 1918, Mehmed - original name Mehmed Resad - spent much of his life in seclusion until the forced abdication of his brother Sultan Abdul Hamid II at the hands of the Young Turks in 1909. A kindly gentle man with an interest in Persian literature, Mehmed was effectively little more than a puppet Sultan whose actions were directed by leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress. Mehmed was little able to govern of his own accord and thus accepted direction from Young Turk leaders including Enver Pasha

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor print captures the moment of celebration as Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey, also known as Mehmed Resad, ascended to the throne in 1909. The kindly and gentle Sultan, who spent much of his life in seclusion, was brought to power following the forced abdication of his brother, Sultan Abdul Hamid II, by the Young Turks. Mehmed V Reshad's reign was marked by his subservience to the Young Turk leaders, including Enver Pasha, who effectively governed on his behalf. The Sultan is depicted here wearing the traditional Ottoman attire, including a red fez adorned with gold trim and a long, flowing robe. His moustache and beard are meticulously groomed, and his eyes are closed in a moment of contemplation or prayer. The background is filled with the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of Turkish art, adding to the rich historical context of the image. Mehmed V Reshad's reign was a time of great change for the Ottoman Empire, as it transitioned from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional government. The Sultan, who was little more than a puppet ruler, was unable to govern effectively on his own accord. However, his peaceful demeanor and love for Persian literature made him a beloved figure among the people. This beautiful watercolor print is a testament to the history and culture of the Ottoman Empire during a time of transformation. It serves as a reminder of the complex political landscape of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the role of the Sultan as a figurehead in the face of larger political forces.
