EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir William Fergusson (1808-1877): A Portrait of Vanity and Pride in Scottish Surgery Sir William Fergusson, a renowned Scottish surgeon, gazes confidently at the viewer in this striking portrait. Born in Forres, Morayshire, Fergusson studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh before honing his surgical skills in London and Paris. He returned to Scotland in 1837 to establish a successful private practice in Edinburgh, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1841. Fergusson's surgical prowess was legendary, and he was known for his innovative techniques and compassionate care. However, this portrait, taken around 1860, reveals another side of the surgeon: his vanity. Dressed in the finest clothing and adorned with a decorative cravat, Fergusson presents himself as a man of refinement and wealth. The artist, unknown to us, has captured the surgeon's self-assured expression and the elegant setting, emphasizing Fergusson's status and success. Despite his vanity, Sir William Fergusson's contributions to Scottish surgery were significant. He was a pioneer in the use of ether as an anesthetic and was one of the first surgeons in Scotland to perform a successful appendectomy. He also wrote extensively on surgical techniques and was a strong advocate for the establishment of a surgical school in Edinburgh. This portrait, a testament to Fergusson's self-perception and the artist's skill, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable surgeon who left an indelible mark on Scottish medicine.
