EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Thomas Gresham's House, an elegant Tudor mansion located in Bishopsgate Street, London, is depicted in this engraving from the Mary Evans Picture Library. Built in 1563, this historic residence was the brainchild of Sir Thomas Gresham, a renowned financier and philanthropist of the Elizabethan era. The house served as a symbol of Gresham's wealth and status, as well as his dedication to the arts and sciences. The engraving beautifully captures the grandeur of the house, with its intricate brickwork, ornate windows, and impressive chimneys. The symmetrical design, typical of Tudor architecture, is accentuated by the lush greenery surrounding the property, providing a striking contrast against the brick facade. Sir Thomas Gresham was a man of many accomplishments. He was a key figure in the establishment of the Royal Exchange, which became a hub for international trade and commerce. He was also instrumental in the founding of Gresham College, a center for learning and education. Despite its historical significance, Sir Thomas Gresham's House did not survive the test of time. It was demolished in 1768, leaving behind only memories and this beautiful engraving as reminders of its former glory. Today, the site is marked by a plaque commemorating the historic residence and its illustrious owner.
